Trivia
Most particle colors can be changed using resource packs, however the color of smoke particles used in redstone, portals, and endermen can not be changed without mods.
Status effect particles will appear where your face is pointing.
Bubble and suspended particles seem to only appear when they are in water.
The "mobappearance" particle will always follow the player regardless of what its location has been set to.
The types of particles and their names in the game`s code are displayed below. Particle names in italic are shown when using the "Minimal" particles setting.

Mechanics
Particles are typically released as part of a spell, attack, or upon activation of a Status Effect, but they can also constantly emerge from certain objects. /particle can summon any particle with a variety of parameters; naturally, however, particle effects appear in the following situations:
Water Effects
Boats travelling over water create water splashes
Bubbles and splash effects occur around any Entity in Water
A Guardian`s laser beam attack produces bubbles
Bubbles appear while Fishing
Wolves shake off droplets after coming out of Water
Droplets fall from the bottom of any Blocks with water above them
Rain
Snow
Fire Effects
Fire
Torch
Furnace
Magma Cube
Mob Spawner
Lava
Mob and Combat Effects
Attacks that land a critical hit produce sparkles
Enchanted Weapons produce a special particle effect on a critical hit
